1. WaterWorks: A RIVER JOURNEY TO THE SEA

If you are a new subscriber to this newsletter, welcome!   The newsletter is published about once a month by the River WaterWorks organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created for the purpose of river and watershed education.   The organization's current project is entitled "WaterWorks: A River Journey to the Sea" and departed from Chautauqua Lake in New York state on Monday 05.September, 2005.   An 18-foot bicycle-powered pontoon boat and its crew are following the journey that a drop of water takes down the Allegheny, Ohio, and Lower Mississippi River all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.   The vessel is currently on the Ohio River at Louisville, KY.   Journey Logbook entries for the first eight weeks of the journey are available online at http://www.riverwaterworks.org/logbook.html .

2. WaterWorks: IN THE NEWS

Articles about the WaterWorks River Journey have appeared in local newspapers as well as the fall publications of two different organizations, the River Network and the Sea Education Association.   The River Network ( http://www.rivernetwork.org ) is based out of Portland, OR and provides support to grassroots river organizations around the country.   The Sea Education Association (SEA) is one of the financial supporters of the WaterWorks project via the 2005 Armin Elsaesser Fellowship.   SEA offers programs in oceanographic research and sail training aboard their two 134' vessels ( http://www.sea.edu ).   News links:

3. WaterWorks: FUNDRAISER!

We'll be entering the Mississipi River sometime during the month of November 2005, and we want you to join us! Not possible you say? Ah, then think again! If you are interested in supporting our river education program, the marvels of modern science have provided us with the technology to write your name on one of the paddlewheel blades of the 'BPV Libelula'. We will be using a chisel-tipped Sharpie Professional grade permanent marker to inscribe the names of all of our fundraiser supporters on one of the implements that move our vessel through the water. You'll be right there behind us offering your support with every turn of the wheel! You'd better hurry though, as space on those paddlewheels is limited! We've only got 12 paddles in the water and 3 spares under the starboard bunk, and we're not quite sure how many names will fit on each blade. So go ahead, be bold, and join the Paddlewheel Club today by donating $5 or $10 or whatever you are able to afford in order to help support our river education program and your favorite river rats.   You can visit the website for more information at:

4. YSI WATER QUALITY DATA AVAILABLE

The model 6920 Sonde water sampling device donated for our use by YSI Environmental (http://www.ysi.com/environmental.html ) has been deployed and some of the data it has been gathering is available online.   You can download images of the data in pdf or jpg form, or you can download the raw data for further analysis and interpretation on your own or for in a classroom setting.   This real data is a great way to introduce students to some of the fundamental principals of water quality.   We will be posting more water quality data for certain legs of our voyage as we continue to make our way downstream.   This river water quality data is included as part of our Journey Logbook and can be found online at:

5. INVENTION RESOURCE DATABASE UPDATE

The vessel 'BPV Libelula' was designed and constructed during the summer of 2005.   A recently created website called the Invention Resource Database ( www.inventionDB.com ) was used to document the building of the boat. The mission of this new web interface is to provide a medium for people to archive, share, and search for creative projects and resources .   In the flurry of the final month of construction of the vessel, the weblog on InventionDB was not kept current.   However, many photos were taken during that time documenting the design and construction efforts which have just been uploaded to the InventionDB website.   Check out the over 30 new pictures that have been added to the InventionDB weblog with regards to the building of the 'BPV Libelula'!
