1. WaterWorks: A RIVER JOURNEY TO THE SEA

If you are a new subscriber to this newsletter, welcome!   The newsletter is published about once a month by the River WaterWorks organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created for the purpose of river and watershed education.   The organization's current project is entitled "WaterWorks: A River Journey to the Sea" and departed from Chautauqua Lake in New York state on Monday 05.September, 2005.   An 18-foot bicycle-powered pontoon boat and its crew are following the journey that a drop of water takes down the Allegheny, Ohio, and Lower Mississippi River all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.   The vessel is currently on the Mississippi River at Memphis, TN.   Journey Logbook entries for the first eleven weeks of the journey are available online at http://www.riverwaterworks.org/logbook.html .

3. WaterWorks: FUNDRAISER!

A big thanks goes out to the numerous people who have already offered their donation in support of the WaterWorks river journey!   We appreciate your help. We are currently on the Mississippi River and it is still not too late to join us!   Not possible you say? Ah, then think again! If you are interested in supporting our river education program, the marvels of modern science have provided us with the technology to write your name on one of the paddlewheel blades of the 'BPV Libelula'. We are using a chisel-tipped Sharpie Professional grade permanent marker to inscribe the names of all of our fundraiser supporters on one of the implements that move our vessel through the water. You'll be right there behind us offering your support with every turn of the wheel!   So go ahead, be bold, and join the Paddlewheel Club today by donating $5 or $10 or whatever you are able to afford in order to help support the WaterWorks river journey.   For more information and to make a secure online donation please visit:

River Water Works is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, as defined by the Internal Revenue Service, meaning all donations to the organization are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

4. TOWBOAT POETRY CONTEST

We've passed by quite a few Towboats during our travels on the river, and we've been keeping track of some of the names of these powerful boats that push barges up and down the rivers. It turns out that in spite of the brutal power these boats can sometimes deliver, their names can be somewhat poetic. This has inspired us to sponsor a Towboat Poetry Contest, complete with prizes!   So put on your creative hat to examine the complete rules, example Towboat names, and Towboat tracking device that can be found on our website at:
