River WaterWorks Newsletter, April 2005

Welcome to the first edition of the River WaterWorks Newsletter.  River WaterWorks is a recently created 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose current project is entitled WaterWorks: A River Journey to the Sea.  The project is an educational endeavor in environmental watershed awareness whose goal is to make people aware of the origins and destinations of the water that they use on a daily basis for recreational and household use.  The concept of the WaterWorks program is to follow the journey of a drop of water from the headwaters of a river all the way to the sea in a small vessel.  The program will begin in Lake Chautauqua in western New York State and follow the Allegheny, Ohio, and Lower Mississippi Rivers all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.  The River WaterWorks project sets sail in September of 2005 and is expected to endure for approximately four months.

3. 2005 ARMIN ELSAESSER III FELLOWSHIP AWARDED

On the 7th of March, 2005 River WaterWorks was awarded the Armin Elsaesser III Fellowship available to alums and faculty of the Sea Education Association (SEA).  This award has been given annually since in 1987 in memory of Armin E. Elsaesser III who died tragically with the sinking of the sailing vessel Pride of Baltimore in 1986.  The award intends to give SEA faculty and alums the opportunity to step outside their usual occupations to undertake an educational adventure.  An article recently published in the SEA alumni newsletter that announced the award can be found at http://www.sea.edu/alumniparents/newsletter04_05.asp.

4. 501(c)(3) NONPROFIT STATUS GRANTED BY IRS

On the 15th of March, 2005, the River WaterWorks Nonprofit Corporation was officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization as defined by the Internal Revenue Service.  This status is important, as it allows the organization to receive tax-deductible donations and qualify for many potential funding opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable.  The application for 501(c)(3) status was submitted in October of 2004 after the organization had filed Articles of Incorporation in the Department of State in Pennsylvania to create a Domestic Nonprofit Corporation with the legal name of River WaterWorks.
